PENN REELS / PENN JIGMASTER
« Last post by Wompus Cat on November 18, 2023, 09:42:39 AM »
Here are some Tidbits gathered form various sources on the ol Interweb about the Versatile and Quite Reliable all round  Jigmaster Fishing Reels .
Will add more info and some Pictures as time goes on .

The Jigmaster was introduced around 1959.
It had red side plates until about 1990 when they were changed to black. The Jigmaster Junior  model 501 which is a narrow version of the regular Jigmaster was introduced around 1965.
A Short Run of the 500S was introduced around  1975 and lasted until 1984.
The 500S was a completely different design in which the left side plate was the side that had the take-apart feature.

The 500S accepted standard Jigmaster spools. In 1986 Penn introduced the 505 Full Size  and the  506 Junior.
These featured high speed gears (5:1) and ball bearings.
These reels required Different  Spools to accommodate the NEW  BALL BEARINGS added in the end plates. The original Jigmaster was available with plastic and metal (chrome plated brass) spools. In 1974 Penn introduced aluminum spools for these reels and soon after discontinued both the plastic and brass spools. Jigmaster's are still available today, however in 2006 Penn moved production of all plastic sided reels, including the Jigmaster, to China. Reels made in China, have black side plates and do not say "Made in USA" anywhere on them. The black sided Jigmaster's that were made in USA, say "Made in USA" on either left or right side plates and sometimes on Both Sides .

PENN REELS / Re: CHINA Penn Senator 113H2 compared to U.S. Made
« Last post by Wompus Cat on October 27, 2023, 07:06:08 AM »
Update to this thread as after Carefull examination of side by side scrutiny along with pix to back it up the Reel is in my opinion  a
POORLY COPIED VERSION OF A FORMERLY GREAT DESIGN

To back up my statement I found the One piece Graphite Frame only has 3 screws of the 5  on each side to hold it together where the early version has 7 of its Eight making it weak as comparison  to the older Version . At a glance it LOOKS LIKE there are Four into the Frame however it is cleverly cut out to allow a Cross Bar to fit down in a U-Shaped  Groove whereas the older has direct contact to Frame on 7 of each side with one Cross Bar at the Top

New Version with only 3 contact points and a optical illusin of more ....lol

Old Version with 7 Contact Points

The Spool while looking like a finely built aluminum one like the Earlier Version seems much lighter although I did NOT weight it  I did measure the Width and found it to be nearly 2 MM shorter and the business End of the Shaft only protrudes about Halfway through the Bearing which is just stuck in the plastic end of the newly shaped Sideplate where the older version has the shaft protruding at least a Millimeter or More and then goes in the Steel Cap inserted in the Sidplate.

Here is the Short Shaft on the China  Reel and the shaft lacks a lot being even half waf in the Bearing . (Can't be Good after a few Trips and a Few  big Fish .)

OLD SPOOL With Bearing

I can only see some major Fubars down the Road with the 2 above mentioned  BOO BOO's

Then there are issues in the  Newly Shaped Drivers Side Sideplate .It just Feels cheap .....lol all I can say and when looking at it closely I found 2 maybe three Surface Cracks around the gear housing .

It is difficult to get Good pix  but you can see one  of the Cracks here

Side by side  you notice some differences like the handles and their respective retainers ,No end bearing Cap , revamped Gear Housing ,and only 5 Screws . The plates ,Spool ,and guts seem to interchange but with some noted differences as follows

They have removed much of the artsy work usually found on the old Reliable Versions making it in my opinion Look Like a Cheap ass Copy of the other.

OLD VERSION with the Classical Jumping Fish

And the new improved  Different looking  Fish and  Lettering

A few other discrepancies I won't mess with right now but may add later such as the Price I got these for then the Letter from a part Supplier I buy from FROM PENN threatening DEALERS (NOT ME) I am just a parts Buyer and part Time Reel Enthusiast and Tinkerer  that DEALERS needed to adhere to a corporate PRICING policy standard not discounting the Reels and parts ( will find that Letter and post it later too.  )

So to me China is making these things so CHEAP and in such quantities that a Dealer could sell them even Cheaper than I paid which was nearly Half of the price Marked on the Box is all I can say.

To sum up what I think is these new ones while appealing will just not be around the 60  Plus Years the old ones have been and of course time will tell .

PENN REELS / CHINA MADE Penn Senator 113H2 compared to U.S. Made
« Last post by Wompus Cat on October 25, 2023, 08:49:43 AM »
Ok PENN is having a lot of their Reels Made in China now and one of their Hugely Popular Old Standard Reels the
4/0 Senator which through the years have gone through slight modifications such as scenery on the side plates ,different spools  one piece three piece Stainless ,Chromed Brass, and even  a Bullet Proof Aluminum one . Different Spring configurations for the A/R Dog, Muti pieced Frames and Cross Bars , Graphite Frames without brass Insrts ,Graphite Frames With Brass inserts, Some aluminum Frames !! .Many Different Handles , Brass Gears,SS Gears as well as some of the Guts. Drag Disks . JUST to name a few subtle changes over the year.

One of the latest is the 113 H2 which is manufactured in CHINA.
In the past a Huge amount of our Goods were Made over seas to save money in production costs and just were not the same Quality as Good Ol' American Made and I was one of the Guys who totally agreed  and with Just Cause I might add
However I recently bought 2 of these and tore in to one to compare .
On a scale of 1 to 10 and 10 Being Muy Bueno I have to give these Reels a 5  ( Nuttin /gets a 10 in my Book except some Purdy Young Voluptuous Thing in a String Bikini  ;D
Some pix. and side by side comparisons to come ( Reel Pix. Not Voluptuous Young Things as there are other sites for that )

Soooooooooooo I bit and bought 2 of em .

They were delivered and of course I HAD to tear in to them to see whaddup .

                             More  Later .

I plan to do a side by side comparison with Pix and measurements to show compatible parts (IF ANY) first Glance  doesn't lookey too good.

It is looking like most parts WILL INTERCHANGE  PIX coming soon .

PENN REELS / Penn Senator 9/0 115 1940's /50's Restoration
« Last post by Wompus Cat on August 02, 2023, 08:20:17 AM »
Here is an Older 9/0  (not positive but with some of the Characteristics it has I believe to be from 1940's or Early 50's.

I got this lil Jewell  off E-Bay with some interesting differences in the from the Newer versions I noted.
It came with a MONSTER Adjustable Handle I have Never seen Before .
Which more than likely led to the problem of the Sleeve being worn Smooth where the handle normally would lock on to it .

Some B 4 photos

Plates ,Rings, Spool Pretty fugged Up!!

Ordered NEW SLEEVE but had some BIG PROBLEMS as the New one was larger inside than the old one and different on the bottom .
The New sleeve is the same part number as the 114H and has a 114 part number but no way it would work ..... It does fit he 114 Bridge Plate though.

The old Sleeve next to the New one you can see the Difference

Old Sleeve id
Even the Handle Nut is Smaller!

New Sleeve id 1mm larger!

The retaining pin is even different on these
Old Pin

New Pin

Old vs new

on left is a 114 Bridge plate with the NEW 9/0 sleeve and fits ok
on Right is the old (9/0 and Bridge plate ) Bridge plate is Numbered 115  but new sleeve has 114 number ????

I bought NEW Chrome Rings but had to some Careful Reaming on 2 of the holes on each one to line up with old plates.

Spool Cleaned up pretty well considering the crud that was on it  but here is a sideview of progress so far.

No part numbers on Foot,Spool and a few other parts which leads me to believe it is from the 40's.

I made a Mandrel out of a piece of Tool Stock  to reshape the old Sleeve to work (WITHOUT DAMAGING THE THREADS  where it was rounded off. So was able to make it work since the New Sleeve was way too big .

Talking to Mystic on this fitment problem as it ain't good .
More later on this .

Finished .

Spool looks a hundred times Better after hours of hand polishing  (NO VINEGAR )
Use Vinegar if you want to Ruin your parts .

Shakespeare made a lot of 2200 series Reels but most were Spincast Models .
They ALSO made a series of Conventional Reels and Damn Good uns from what I see.
First I have is a 2210 OCEAN PRIDE
About the Size of an Ocean City  112 or Penn 112 .
This is a Well Built 3/0 size Reel with a Free Spool but NO DRAG nor anti Reverse .
They also made a 2220 OCEAN PRIDE  with A/R and Star Drag as well as Quick  a Take-Apart Feature  akin to Ocean City,Penn, Pflueger Reels of the Day But on the opposite side !!
and a 2230 SURF WONDER REEL also with attributes of the 2220. Will post Pictures and Teardowns  of each in the Near   future .
The 2200 has no code on it however the others are GK making them in the 1941 Range  .

Logo was below the lever up to early 60's on the larger senators. The 2nd pic isn't crooked logo, it's just the reel sitting sideways. The 9/0 you have that just says "senator" was only on the 9/0 from '36- to '40. All other early senators had model # in the logo

PENN REELS / Re: How old is my Penn Reel ??
« Last post by MAXED OUT on April 27, 2023, 06:55:33 PM »
Here are a few from my collection. I'm on a low budget and most of these have been sold to collectors, and those funds go towards buying more reels.

Far left is 1959 prototype long beach 60 box. Rest are all pre 1950. Note the slanted title on the labels. Far right is 1941/42 long beach 60 L.S. with correct box. The front right reel is 1942 long beach 66.
