PENN REELS / Re: Penn Trade Reel Kingfisher Similarities 1933
« Last post by Wompus Cat on January 19, 2025, 06:49:24 AM »
Looks to me the Henze  Patent is for the Reel design itself having elongated end bearings and only 4 side plate screws ( NEED TO GET THE PATENT INFO ANBD READ IT ) as to the Ocean City with 6 and no free wheel on Henze but a rather unique Free Wheel on the Ocean city in which the entire Bridge Pivots moving the Main Gear away from the Pinion which can also be seen on Many other Reels of the Time like Clark,HI ,Wilson ,Winchester, and others .
The Weird Ass K might not be a K at all but rather a makers mark of the company that made those plates for various companies in the day as I don't think PENN made their own until later .

PENN REELS / Penn Trade Reel Kingfisher Similarities 1933
« Last post by Biggamereels1988 on January 18, 2025, 02:30:51 PM »
I picked up what I believe to be a Penn Trade Reel "Kingfisher" Sold at Edward Tyron Co. in 1933. I don't have any documents but I'm sure a 1933 or 34 Catalog might help. :D

I've seen the molds for this Kingfisher Logo next to a Schultz Fire Island, Coronado, Newport, Senator, and many others. The original dye plugs when I was buying and researching Penn in 2007/2009. I had a Kingfisher reel back then but it didn't have the (K) on the inside of the plate. That same (K) can be found on many 1933 reels including the Seahawk and Longbeach. I was told this refers to Kuhn? Here is all the Pictures of the Kingfisher and other examples of the Seahawk, the Long Beach, and the Otto Henze patent.

These images are from old posts I made around 2008. I don't have the originals. Bare with me. :D
The Long Beach Models I owned. The 3rd one had the (K) I was going to collect one from each year. :D

Here is the Seahawk which it closely resembles with the (K)

This one had the dome Clicker 1932/33 issue same as Model F and K.

Otto Henze Patent

This is the Patent for Godshalk of Ocean City Mfg. Co. - Take a look at these guts, look familiar?
They sure did work around everyones improvements and patents.

This forum is to see other Penn reels that resemble these. If you find any, please share!

For Sale or Trade / For Sale: Very Large Inventory of Reel Parts Available
« Last post by leland99 on January 13, 2025, 04:36:44 PM »
I am posting this message for vintage reel collector and past reel repairman Bill Bird of Grandy, NC. Bill has a very large inventory of new reel parts and parts reels which he would like to sell as a single lot. New reel parts are for freshwater and saltwater reels from 1960's to 2008 from makers including but not limited to Pflueger, South Bend, Shakespeare, Penn, Shimano, and Ocean City. This is not a file cabinet of parts, but enough to fill a small trailer.

Here is Bill's contact information:   billboard844@gmail. com.  Phone  252-564-4131    Bill is working on obtaining photos of his stuff.

This message is on the O. R. C. A.  Reel Talk page as well.

( HOWEVER THEY WON'T ALLOW THE OWNERS E-MAIL AND PHONE NUMBER TO BE POSTED )

I know Bill would appreciate hearing from serious potential buyers.

PENN REELS / Re: Some Facts about the PENN REEL HISTORY
« Last post by Biggamereels1988 on January 11, 2025, 03:22:06 PM »
I do allot of digging in old newspapers for Ocean City related articles and I always search for Penn as well. In the Philadelphia Inquirer I find hundreds of clips related to Ocean City Mfg. Co. but very little on Penn. Infact, Penn is barely seen in any newspapers in the 1930's/1940's. These 2 articles are the only ones I've come across in a Florida newspaper. I wonder if any of the competition had influence on what was being promoted.

I know Penn has ads in catalogs and magazines but it's hard to find anything really really early.

Wanted / Argus No. 575 Seat or Parts Reel Wanted
« Last post by Crab Pot on September 06, 2024, 12:37:29 PM »
Was surfing the Book of Face and came across this Argus No. 575 Reel.

Notified the seller I would take it and 40 minutes later I was holding it. Seller took very accurate photos of everything but the missing seat... :-X

Seeing how I've never heard of the Argus Reel Company I didn't let on that I really wanted it and negotiated the purchase price down to $20.00. So I'm happy again.  ;)

Overall the reel was FLITHY! It turns, the drag works, clicker is good, excentric is a bit sticky, and there is zero free spool. Nothing a good cleaning won't take care of.

Juding by the seat mount the seat was riveted to the mount and appears to be one piece (albeit two riveted sections????).

Does anyone have a seat they are willing to sell me or maybe a parts reel? I went to Flea-Bay and with the exception of another model of baitcaster the only Argus reels they currently have are fly reels.

If anyone has a manual link I'd sure appreciate one, Google let me down.

Thanks,

Steve
