For Sale or Trade / RARE PENN 430 CLOSED FACE REELS (NOT SOLD IN AMERICA)
« Last post by Wompus Cat on November 02, 2025, 08:01:51 AM »
YOU SEE THESE FROM TIME TO TIME ON E-BAY AND A FEW AUCTION SITES

THESE WERE BUILT IN JAPAN OVER 60 YEARS AGO FROM AMERICAN MADE PENN PARTS BUT WERE NEVER SOLD IN AMERICA WITH THE PENN NAME ON THEM .

Here is some info I got from research

Penn wanted to get in the Closed Face Reel Market with their own Models in the early 60's. .
They asked  Daiwa to make the parts, and shipped back to  Penn for assembly. These Penn Closed Face  were built, boxed and stored away in a back room at the Penn factory. Several years later a few did escape and make it into circulation, but Daiwa still had parts to make more, so they were painted different colors and rebranded as a Daiwa reel. These Daiwa reels were only sold in Japan. The early versions of these Daiwa reels even came with a cloth pouch that proudly confirms the Penn/Daiwa connection.

This is from the late

The Penn 410,420, & 430 were never marketed by Penn. The story that I've heard and been told is one of the Penn Family was a WWII prisoner of was in Japan and when he found out that the parts were built there he forbid the sale of the reels as long as he lived. When he passed they were sold to a buyer in Florida with a contract/ understanding that the Penn emblem on the side of the reel had to be removed before the reels could be sold. That buyer died suddenly and when they were resold the stipulation on the emblem didn't follow through to the new buyer and that is why you can find them with the emblem still attached. In the Penn headquarters there is a Black one in their show case but it's turned the wrong direction and we have not been able to see the side with the emblem and a number assigned to the reel. A mystery that we are still working on. The original year that they were all built is out there but memory at the moment fails me. Hope the above info helps.

I bought a box at a Recent NFLCC MEET from an 80 + year old collector from Florida  who bought those that were bought by the Deceased Dealer ! They had been stored in his Basement for over 60  years the Story Goes and is evident by some water staining on some of the Boxes .

They are all Metal including the side Cover.
On the bottom of the Foot is stamped

I recently acquired a Penn 349HC Master Mariner off the Bay with some interesting oddities .
Looks BRAND NEW .Came with Box .Warranty Card, some advertising papers, tissue paper, wrench,Grease Tube and a #18 Catalog .Box says 349HC on it .

The A/R was non functional and the Clicker did not work

When I tore into it I found that they had neglected to install the Clicker Spring and just left it laying inside the Plate with the  2 Attaching screws just rolling around with it .
Have pix and will post more about it later...........

Here  are some pix No special order ....

This shows the Clicker Ring just Floatin around inside the Side Plate with the 2  Screws NEVER INSTALLED

The original Grease had Hardened enough o Keep the A/R/Dog from moving in Place. Simple Fix

Clearly NEVER or RARELY EVER USED From looking at the Drags and Gear

Faded Sticker says Ratio 3 1/4 To 1
