PENN REELS / Re: Bryan Young 7+1 Drag Kits for 113 H Bad Fitment ?
« Last post by Crab Pot on February 28, 2024, 08:36:07 PM »
I have never had a complaint about anything I ordered from Bryan Young and I have ordered many drag sets from his company.

I also know him personally.

If ever there was something wrong I know he would stand behind his products it and make it right.

My 2-cents-worth,

Steve

PENN REELS / Re: PENN BAJA SPECIAL 113HN and U.S. SENATOR MODEL BRIDGE PROBLEMS
« Last post by Wompus Cat on February 28, 2024, 03:24:38 AM »
Tore into a Recently acquired U.S.113 Senator . Yep it has the Same Guts as the BAJA
This one however DID NOT have the loose pins in it but rather a looks like FACTORY MODIFIED
BRIDGE PLATE in that the pins are bigger on bottom and protrude more through the plate as well as they are PEENED much better than previous versions and SHOULD HOLD UP !
I wonder IF someone could get hold of Tony (The PENN REP) over on tani site and ask him WHADDUP and when did PENN wake up and fix this . Here are some pix and a pic of the Frame #

Maybe this number will help pin point when this started

NOW ANOTHER PROBLEM
This reel has a hairline crack in the Handle side Side Plate

Wonder How Many of these there are out there ?????

I will Stop Drill  and Fill it so she should be good to go  but still why in the first place ????
Screws were not loose or no sign of abuse ....

A Much Overlooked Reel of the Past in my Opinion is this 981 .
Possibly the LAST WELL BUILT REEL by the Company in that it has  the Fine Quality OCEAN CITY WAS FAMOUS FOR .

Such as except for the Drag Metals the Guts are ALL STAINLESS STEEL!!!
Even has the Felt inserts in the end Caps to hold Oil . Bridge Guts Plate is held with a C-Clip instead of the swivel retainer with set Screw . The Spool is Fluted to use the Mono Lines that would normally blow out the sides when stressed .

It is in the cleaner right now .
Will reassemble with Carbon Tex Drags and post pix.

After a 24 Hour Dip in  the Sauce

NEW CARBON TEX DRAGS

This is the start of Ocean City's save a  Dime era
where they started skimping on stuff like leaving out the Check valves on the oilers and soon to  use TRUE TEMPER STICKERS instead of Embossing or using the Quality Metal Name  Plates Pinned in the side plates
NOTICE there is NO Spring Loaded Deal in the Oil Hole

JUST CHEEEEEP !

Ready to go another 60 Years !

The 981e is the same Reel except for the Spool is Aluminum and has a Cheap Ass Sticker on the plate instal of Embossed or a Metal Tag. CHHHHHHEEEEEEEP.
(The 981 above weighs 13.82 0unces with it's Chromed Metal Spool and the e with an aluminum spool weighs 12.43 ounces .

From the 30's
They made at least 2 verions of these, the 932  and a Wider version 939

Quite an interesting lil Reel made in the 30's .

Here it is Before and showing the Starless Drag some what

Cleaned up a bit  showing NEW Carbon Tex Drags
The A/R Dog is a Weak Point on this and the 939 . It does NOT HOLD WELL AT ALL

Side plates and Guts cleaned and assembled

The Spool turned out better than expected

Notice the Infamous FLYING DOG SPRING also used in later PENN REELS

Henry, thanks for all the great insights on this.  Are you able to share any insights you might have on the approximate years that this transition from Great to Inferior occurred?

Thanks!!  Great post, appreciate it.

It is difficult to say but when they started making changes and putting New & Improved  in their ads that  meant NEW Maybe but CHEAPER COMPONENT QUALITY .
So in the 60's I think they were Gasping For Air in the OCEAN of REEL MANUFACTURING
It is clear to me now that PENN made better Quality and Cheaper priced Reels thus contributing to the Demise of old OCEAN CITY Company  plus OCEAN CITY buying out so many other reel companies in the past along with MONTAGUE it just was too much .
